A brief history of Darrang College

The move for starting a College at Tezpur, the most picturesque and archeologically famous spot in Assam was initiated by some leading citizens of the town as early as in 1941. But the fury of the World War II coupled with the freedom struggle of our motherland did not permit its immediate materialization. However, after the War was over; and the freedom movement coming to a stable condition, the College was started in July 1945 with 8 teachers and 112 students in the roll. Late Kamakhya Prasad Tripathy, a veteran freedom fighter and trade union leader came forward to shoulder the responsibility of the founder Principal of the College. Initially the Classes were held at the banglow of Mr. Ducci, an Italian gentleman who sold the property to the College.

Subsequently, the College was shifted for nearly two years to the American Base Hospital campus at Mission Chariali, then to the Dak Bunglow in the heart of the town, and finally to the present site in the month of October, 1951.

Darrang College has had an eventful career since its inception. His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet visited the College in 1959 after his historic flight from his own land; followed Smt. Indira Gandhi in 1963.

Ever since the College settled in its permanent site, it has been maintaining a high academic standard all through. This is particularly true in case of the Science faculty though Arts and Commerce, too, are not lagging behind. It can very rightly be anticipated that with a band of dedicated teachers and a multitude of sincere students Darrang College will be able to maintain its past glory and achieve new heights in the days to come.

Cultural

Tezpur is quite famous as the cultural center of North-East India. This is prima facie justifiable because of the invaluable contributions of the so named “Trimurti” viz., Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwalla, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha, and Natasurya Phani Sarma towards the promotion of Art and Cultural in Assam. This tradition still prevails in the region. Our College has produced a number of luminaries in various fields of art and culture such as music and drama ( on both screen and stage ), debate and discourse, and the like. Instances that happened to add a feather or two to the big cap of the College are not few.
